Friends of the Library present a pictorial
history of Round Valley:
"These pictures show not only people, but a historical recording
of the times and lives of these pioneer people, both Native American
and European. Highly recommended!"

"FAMILIES"
A Pictorial History of Round Valley,
1864 to 1938
by local authors Elmer Bauer and Floyd Barney
The people of this remote mountain valley have learned to live
with isolation, hard winters, racial tensions, and how to get
along on less of almost everything but wildlife and natural beauty.
We owe the existence of this book to the vision of one man. Elmer
Bauer was determined to show that despite their differences the
people of Round Valley have lived, raised their children, and
died here for generations- Native Americans for many hundreds
of generations, whites for six of them. Making no claim for historical
detail, this book offers the reader the photographic evidence-
and some of the stories they told themselves along the way- to
demonstrate how people of diverse origins have come together to
make a life.
Asked if he was bitter about the past, he said, "No man is
my enemy. The country then was like a young buck shaking his horns
and seeing fight everywhere. And everybody wanted the land, the
ones that were here and the ones that came in. What was right?
If you have to say what was right and what was wrong, then you
have to think who was right and who was wrong. I don't like that.
I like people to be the way they are."
--From an interview with "Uncle Jim", born December
25, 1862
